David Littleproud retains leadership of the Nationals
The news: Nationals leader David Littleproud has retained his position and Kevin Hogan has been appointed deputy leader.
Bridget McKenzie has been appointed leader of the Nationals in the Senate.
The ballot, held at 3pm, was between Littleproud and Queensland senator Matt Canavan.
The context: The announcement came an hour after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese outlined the government's reshuffled cabinet.
The Liberals will vote on their new leader on Tuesday, with Sussan Ley, Angus Taylor and Tim Wilson expected to take a tilt at the top role.
“I’m proud of our achievements over the last three years … where I think we set the policy agenda,” Littleproud said after the vote.
He acknowledged the Nationals had “lost any opportunity to form government” but was confident the next election could be won.
“Make no mistake, the fundamentals haven't changed. Cost of living is going nowhere, and an all renewables [approach] won't work. Your energy bill is going to go up. Someone's going to have to have the courage to face up to that at some point, and it'll be the Nationals that continue to be there.”
