The news: Elon Musk has escalated his attacks on Donald Trump’s signature tax and spending bill, urging Americans to “Call your Senator, Call your Congressman” and “KILL the BILL.”

In a series of social media pots, Musk also called for a new bill to be drafted, saying: “A new spending bill should be drafted that doesn’t massively grow the deficit and increase the debt ceiling by 5 TRILLION DOLLARS.”

The context: The day before, Musk had called the House-passed bill a “disgusting abomination” that will grow deficits and undermined cuts made by this Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

According to reports from Axios and ABC, Musk has also privately opposed cuts to the electric vehicle tax credit included in the bill.

His criticism and campaign against Trump’s signature tax and spending bill, central to the president’s legislative agenda, come just days after he left his role leading DOGE last Friday. It has bolstered Senate fiscal hawks already critical of the bill.

The bill, which Trump calls his “one big, beautiful bill,” passed the House last month by one vote and is now before the Senate.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated Wednesday that the bill would add USD2.4 trillion (3.7 trillion) to deficits over the next decade.

What they said: Responding to Musk’s comments, House Speaker Mike Johnson told Fox News on Wednesday “We don't have time for a brand new bill… We worked on the bill for almost 14 months... We have a great product to deliver here," he said.
