eSafety raises concerns with X over Grok AI undressing deepfakes
The news: The Office of the eSafety Commissioner has written to Elon Musk’s social media platform X expressing concerns relating to several reports that the integrated Grok AI has been used to generate “sexualised or exploitative imagery”.
The context: eSafety said in a statement on Friday it has written to X “seeking further information about the safeguards in place to prevent Grok’s misuse on its service and to comply with these obligations”.
The online safety regulator confirmed on Wednesday that it was investigating complaints about sexualised deepfake images generated on X and has now reiterated concerns the content "may sexualise or exploit people, particularly children".
Although it noted that the number of reports it has received “remains small”, the regulator said it has seen a “recent increase from almost none to several reports over the past couple of weeks relating to the use of Grok to generate sexualised or exploitative imagery”.
“eSafety will use its powers, including removal notices, where appropriate and where material meets the relevant thresholds defined in the Online Safety Act,” the statement read.
eSafety is also “engaging closely with international child protection organisations and online safety regulators, who have identified similar emerging patterns involving Grok and other generative AI tools”.
New mandatory online safety codes that impose new expectations on social media platforms relating to age-restricted material like pornography are due to come into effect on 9 March 2026.
