Iran reverses Strait of Hormuz reopening, ships attacked
The news: Iranian officials have reversed the planned reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Reports emerged on Sunday morning (AEST) that Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps ships fired at a tanker attempting to pass through the strait. Reuters reported that an Indian vessel carrying crude oil had been attacked.
Iran said the decision is due to the US continuing its blockade.
The context: The resumption of the closure follows reports that Iran was opening the Strait following a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon.
US President Donald Trump claimed on the weekend that a deal to end the war was mostly complete, with talks over a lasting agreement “probably” being held over the weekend or Monday in Pakistan.
On Friday evening, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese virtually attended global talks to re-open the Strait, through which a fifth of the world’s oil travels.
