The news: US President Donald Trump has issued a fresh military threat to Iran as the ceasefire hangs in the balance less than two weeks after the deal was negotiated.

The context: Writing on Truth Social on Sunday morning AEST, Trump warned confirmed the US military had conducted new strikes on Iran. The strikes follow Iran’s Revolutionary Guard attacking a Singapore-flagged cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz. And he said more military action may be required.

On Sunday morning, Treasurer Jim Chalmers told ABC Insiders that “we desperately need the ceasefire to stick” and the nation “can’t have another false dawn when it comes to the Middle East and particularly the Strait of Hormuz”.

The Middle East tensions have added pressure to local inflation and have concerned Treasury officials, but headline inflation is now expected to hit 4.25% by the middle of the year compared to 5% forecast at the May budget.

What they said: “United States aircraft just struck Iranian missile and drone storage locations, and coastal radar sites, for violating the Cease Fire Agreement, AGAIN!” Trump said in a social media post.

“It is very possible that they will never learn!

“There may come a point when we are no longer able to be reasonable, and will be forced to militarily complete the job that we very successfully started,” he said.

“If that happens, the Islamic Republic of Iran will no longer exist!”
