IREN announces South Australia data centre campus
The news: Sydney-headquartered Nasdaq-listed neocloud IREN has announced an agreement to build an 800 megawatt data centre in Bundey, South Australia.
The numbers: IREN has said the data centre project is expected to create 200 ongoing skilled jobs, plus more than 500 during construction.
The transmission agreement is expected to support up to 800MW without requiring network upgrades. The project should “commence energization from 2028,” IREN said in a statement.
IREN shares were trading around 3.58% higher in premarket trading, at around $70.
The context: IREN has four operational data centres in North America with a further two under development. It has previously outlined plans to develop new sites in Australia in 2028 and has a series of projects in Spain following the acquisition of Nostrum Group.
What they said: IREN Co-CEO and Co-founder Daniel Roberts said “the Bundey campus is able to serve global and regional AI demand, as well as South Australia’s own growing need for AI compute.”
South Australia Premier Peter Malinauskas said IREN’s proposal is “a significant investment” in the state.
