The news: The Albanese government has struck a deal with the Senate crossbench that will secure the passage of 29 bills by the end of the day, including reforms to the Reserve Bank of Australia and its Future Made in Australia legislation.

The context: In a chaotic final day of parliament, the government amended the list of 36 bills it wanted to pass, coming to an agreement with the Greens and Senate independents David Pocock and Jacqui Lambie to pass 29 bills.

The reforms to the central bank, which the Coalition is opposing, will include the establishment of a second RBA board to deal with monetary policy, in addition to a governance board.

The deal also secures the passage of the Future Made in Australia Bill, which will provide the framework for dolling out billions of dollars in tax incentives for green hydrogen and critical minerals projects.

What they said: “The Senate is expecting to pass more than 30 pieces of legislation just today — making a real difference, building more rental properties to take pressure off renters… strengthening and modernising the Reserve Bank of Australia,” Albanese said in Question Time.

“Legislating an objective for superannuation, making it clear that it is about a dignified retirement for more Australians.

“This is what it looks like to have a government that is prepared to work across the Parliament to turn promises into progress.

“What those opposite have done consistently is just seek to oppose. We are getting things done, they are just getting angry… We are acting responsibly. They are acting recklessly.”
