Melbourne defence tech startup Arkeus wins Australian Army contract
The news: Defence tech startup Arkeus has been selected to support the Australian Army's wide area airborne surveillance program.
The context: The Melbourne-based outfit said that its hyperspectral optical radar (HSOR) was chosen to enhance the army's tactical uncrewed aerial systems.
Arkeus was selected following a competitive process that assessed advanced sensing technologies from around the world.
The company's HSOR was developed under successive Australian Defence contracts to address operational limitations in traditional systems. It will be used to support the army's reconnaissance, targeting and manoeuvre operations.
Arkeus — which is backed by deep tech investment funds Main Sequence, Salus Ventures and Beaten Zone Ventures — has already seen its HSOR used by the US Department of War.
What they said: "Our customer needs capability that delivers an effect across challenging and degraded visual environments," said Arkeus CEO Simon Olsen.
"Throughout this process, HSOR has consistently demonstrated its ability to perform where conventional optical systems struggle."
