The news: Melbourne-based startup Matrak, which automates supply chain management for the construction industry, has launched a UK office as it responds to growing demand in Europe.

The context: Matrak said the move was driven by an increase in large-scale projects it is supporting across Europe, particularly in the UK. The startup said it is seeing a significant rise in hospital developments and data centre builds, with more major suppliers to Australia now based in Europe.

"Many of these suppliers are involved in delivering complex, high-volume data set pieces, which has made a local presence essential," Matrak said.

"Establishing a dedicated office in the UK allows the company to better support our partners on the ground and further strengthen our global supply chain network."

Founded in 2018, the company is now supporting 700 active construction projects and has tracked more than $15 billion in construction materials across its platform.

Matrak started by streamlining international supply chains for large-scale Australian construction projects. Its platform connects manufacturers and project teams in real-time, removing manual workflows and improving transparency.

The company secured an AI patent in 2019 for automating project cost estimation. It is set to release its latest product, Matrak Connect, later this year — an AI-powered coordination system that automates end-to-end construction processes, including carbon tracking and compliance.

What they said: “After labour, building materials are the second biggest cost in construction,” Matrak co-founder Shane Hodgkins said.

“With Matrak Connect, our pilot customers will fully automate the tendering and project management process, unlocking massive competitive advantage while eliminating the resource bottlenecks that traditionally limit business growth.”
