The news: Meta Platforms has poached Apple’s top executive in charge of artificial intelligence models, Ruoming Pang, Bloomberg reported citing unnamed sources.

Pang, an engineer and manager of the Apple foundation models team, is the latest big hire for Meta’s new superintelligence team.

The numbers: According to the report, Meta offered a package worth tens of millions of dollars per year to lure Pang. He had been running a roughly 100-person team responsible for the company’s large language models, which underpin Apple Intelligence and other AI features.

The context: Pang’s exit is the most significant departure in Apple’s AI ranks since the launch of Apple Intelligence. It also comes amid internal scrutiny of the foundation models team and Apple’s reported exploration of using third-party models from OpenAI or Anthropic.

With Pang’s exit, the team will be run by Zhifeng Chen under a new organisational structure, Bloomberg said.
