Network 10 and Sky News strike fresh regional TV deal
The news: Network 10 and Sky News Australia have struck a new deal that will see the News Corp-controlled pay TV network broadcast to select regional markets for at least another two years.
The context: The deal, which was announced on Monday for a “multi-year” term, will see Network 10 broadcast Sky News Australia in regional Victoria, southern and northern New South Wales and regional Queensland. The value of the agreement was not disclosed.
Sky News Australia struck deals with Southern Cross Austereo and WIN Corp in 2021 to take its free-to-air linear channel to audiences across regional Australia.
However, those licenses were sold to Network 10 in transactions finalised earlier this year, triggering first-time negotiations between the Paramount-owned broadcaster and News Corp’s Sky which extended beyond the previous deal’s July expiry.
What they said: “Sky News Regional was established to deliver an essential news service for regional Australians and since launching has consistently grown its audience, with more people than ever now relying on our live news coverage and opinion programming that speaks to the issues they care about,” said Paul Whittaker, chief executive of Sky News Australia.
“Through this multi-year agreement with Network 10 we’re pleased to provide our loyal regional free-to-air viewers ongoing access to our unrivalled mix of live breaking news, insightful opinion, documentaries, sport, business and weather updates.”
Paramount’s Australian regional lead and Network 10 president Beverley McGarvey said the deal broadens the network’s advertising inventory and national market offering.
“We’ve achieved another significant milestone of Network 10’s commercial strategy, which is aligned to our acquisition of major regional TV licences,” McGarvey said in a statement.
