OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever launches AI company Safe Superintelligence
The news: OpenAI's co-founder and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever has announced he is starting a new artificial intelligence company called Safe Superintelligence.
The context: Sutskever, who departed from the ChatGPT maker last month, will be joined in the new venture by former OpenAI researcher Daniel Levy and former AI lead at Apple Daniel Gross.
Safe Superintelligence will be focused on creating a safe AI environment at a time when some of the biggest tech companies are looking to dominate the generative AI boom.
Sutskever left Microsoft-backed OpenAI in May after playing a key role in CEO Sam Altman's dramatic firing and rehiring in November last year. He was removed from the company's board after Altman returned.
What they said: Announcing the new company on X, Sutskever said: "We will pursue safe superintelligence in a straight shot, with one focus, one goal, and one product. We will do it through revolutionary breakthroughs produced by a small cracked team. Join us".
Safe Superintelligence said on X: "We approach safety and capabilities in tandem, as technical problems to be solved through revolutionary engineering and scientific breakthroughs. We plan to advance capabilities as fast as possible while making sure our safety always remains ahead.
"This way, we can scale in peace.
"Our singular focus means no distraction by management overhead or product cycles, and our business model means safety, security, and progress are all insulated from short-term commercial pressures."
