OpenAI in talks to reinstate Sam Altman days after he was fired: Reuters
The news: OpenAI's ousted CEO Sam Altman is in discussions over a possible return to the company, Reuters reported, citing unnamed sources.
The numbers: The possible return has been driven by anger from investors and employees, who are worried how an upcoming USD86 billion ($132 billion) share sale could be affected by the sudden management upheaval. Altman's reinstating would cap a tumultuous 48 hours after he was removed with little notice given to him or the company's biggest financial backer Microsoft, which has pumped $US13 billion into the organisation.
The context: Altman was fired by the company board on Friday, in a surprise move that sent shockwaves through Silicon Valley and Wall Street, as well as the Australian tech world. According to Reuters reports, he is in discussions over a possible return to the nonprofit behind ChatGPT, even as he considers launching a new artificial intelligence venture.
What they said: The company announced the leadership change on Friday, stating: “Mr. Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities. The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.”
OpenAI's Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap wrote in an internal company memo that Altman's outser was due to a "breakdown of communications" not "malfeasance".
