The news: OpenAI has officially launched its startup program offering free API credits to access its AI models, direct technical assistance from OpenAI engineers and access to workshops, events and networking opportunities.

The program is being rolled out in collaboration with January Capital, NextGen Ventures and Boab AI in addition to the previously reported Blackbird Ventures, Square Peg Capital and Airtree.

The context: The company also announced it would establish an annual Founder Day in Australia which gives local founders the chance to “connect with OpenAI leaders and engineers through hands-on product sessions, live demonstrations and practical guidance”.

The company also has a collaboration with La Trobe University to roll out ChatGPT Edu to all staff and students by 2027 and to establish an AI-focused MBA program.

What they said: “From Canva to Atlassian, Australia is home to some of the world’s most successful tech companies,” OpenAI chief strategy officer Jason Kwon said at the inaugural founders day on Wednesday.

“Australia produces more billion-dollar startups per VC dollar than any other country, and we’re now seeing that same ingenuity emerge in the speed at which Australian founders are adopting advanced AI and building entirely new products and services on top of our platform.”
