The news: ChatGPT owner OpenAI has expanded its global news content partnerships after unveiling fresh deals with Le Monde and Prisa Media.

The numbers: Le Monde is one of France's leading news outlets, with more than 600,000 subscribers, 2.2 million unique users a day and generating over 632 million page views per month.

Prisa Media, which operates leading media brands in Spain, Latin America and the US, has over seven million daily unique users with over 1,650 million page views per month.

The context: OpenAI said the partnerships will give ChatGPT users access to French and Spanish news content from Le Monde and Prisa Media, while the content will also be used to train generative AI models.

In December last year, OpenAI announced a partnership with Axel Springer — owner of Politico, Business Insider, Bild and Welt — in what the companies are called a first-of-its-kind deal to leverage AI in journalism.

Meanwhile, OpenAI is facing an ongoing lawsuit filed by the New York Times, which is seeking billions of dollars in damages with claims that OpenAI has profited from the “exploitation and misappropriation of The Times’ intellectual property”.

What they said: OpenAI's chief operating officer Brad Lightcap said: "We're dedicated to supporting journalism by applying new AI technologies and enhancing opportunities for content creators. In partnership with Le Monde and Prisa Media, our goal is to enable ChatGPT users around the world to connect with the news in new ways that are interactive and insightful.”

Le Monde CEO Louis Dreyfus said: "At the moment we are celebrating the 80th anniversary of Le Monde, this partnership with OpenAI allows us to expand our reach and uphold our commitment to providing accurate, verified, balanced news stories at scale. Collaborating with OpenAI ensures that our authoritative content can be accessed and appreciated by a broader, more diverse audience".

Chair and CEO of Prisa Media Carlos Nuñez said: “Joining forces with OpenAI opens new avenues for us to engage with our audience. Leveraging ChatGPT's capabilities allows us to present our in-depth, quality journalism in novel ways, reaching individuals who seek credible and independent content".
