Woodside eyeing US LNG supplies: Bloomberg
The news: Woodside is in talks to buy liquefied natural gas (LNG) from a number of US firms, Bloomberg has reported, citing unnamed sources.
The context: The Australian energy giant is in talks with several US export terminals, the report said, including Energy Transfer LP’s Lake Charles project in Louisiana. That project has not started construction and is currently affected by the Biden administration’s pause on granting new LNG export approvals.
The pause stems from the administration's consideration of environmental and economic concerns. Energy Transfer’s request to extend its existing permit for the plant was denied last year. Woodside also has a contract with Commonwealth LNG — another project affected by the pause.
Bloomberg said other buyers that agreed to purchase LNG from Lake Charles were Shell, China’s ENN Energy Holdings and South Korea’s SK Gas.
The news follows the collapse of merger talks between Woodside and Santos earlier this week.
