For the ACCC, supermarkets have been a happy hunting ground in 2026 — both in the aisles and at the checkout.
The competition cop had a big win over Coles in the fake discounts case on 14 May and will be hoping for a similar result against Woolworths.
It is also in the middle of another big — and very long-running — case against Mastercard involving more than 20 retailers, including Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and Costco. (More on that below.)
However, ACCC chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb knows the real gauge of success will be the size of the fines imposed. On that front, predictions of “hundreds of millions” for both supermarkets are looking a bit shaky after the Coles case.
