In a move that surprised no one, ANZ’s head of retail, Maile Carnegie, announced her retirement, having missed out on the CEO gig to Portuguese banker Nuno Matos.

ANZ will now conduct a “global search” for a new retail boss — at the same time Westpac is also looking for a new retail chief, and National Australia Bank is on the hunt for a chief financial officer. NAB’s search was triggered by Westpac poaching its highly regarded CFO, Nathan Goonan.
One obvious place for all three banks to look is market behemoth Commonwealth Bank. CBA is not only the most valuable bank by a wide margin — it also has the deepest pool of executive talent.
