There are three takeaways from High Court Justice Robert Beech-Jones’ remarkable and combative speech to the North Queensland Law Association conference.
First, he doesn’t care much for the Samuel Griffith Society (SGS), the conservative legal group that now has 23 university chapters.
Second, he would have expected his comments to be perceived as an attack on Justice Simon Steward and, to a lesser extent, Justice James Edelman.
Third, the High Court is not a happy place at the moment.
Beech-Jones delivered the ‘Griffith Country’ speech on 16 May at Ville Resort-Casino in Townsville and posted it to the High Court’s website late last week.
