Two and a half months ago, Joe Biden malfunctioned in front of the world. Today, Kamala Harris cheerily laughed as she allowed Donald Trump’s worst excesses to take the headlines, only intervening to hammer home key attack lines.
Harris’ polling bounce may have slowed recently, but her first presidential debate further justified the decision to drop Biden from the ticket.
Her campaign had fought rules that the candidates' microphones would be muted when they weren’t answering, figuring that would impose discipline on Trump.
They needn’t have worried.
The ABC moderators certainly went harder than their CNN counterparts did when Trump and Biden met, repeatedly interjecting to correct the former president. But Trump gave them plenty of opportunities as Harris got under his skin.
