Blackbird's deep tech doyenne Clare Birch takes flight
A well-liked and highly regarded Blackbird investor who served on Innovation Minister Ed Husic's quantum computing advisory board is leaving the firm for pastures new.
Blackbird scientist-in-residence Clare Birch is leaving the Australian venture fund to pursue a career outside of VC, focusing on her own projects in science and startups.
Birch, an investment associate at the firm who was involved in a swathe of significant 'deep tech' deals, also served as a representative on a federal quantum computing advisory board set up by Innovation Minister Ed Husic.
“I’m excited for the future, but these things are always bittersweet. In this case, I’m optimistic and lucky that this is an evolution in my relationship with the Blackbird team, not the end,” Birch told Capital Brief.
Birch joined Blackbird in 2021, bringing with her a strong scientific background that saw her appointed as the country's first scientist-in-residence at a venture capital firm. The appointment was made around the time that Blackbird was looking to increase its focus on deep tech investments under partner Michael Tolo.
