How Number 8 Bio is incentivising farmers to lower emissions

Number 8 Bio co-founder and CEO Tom Williams is betting that farmers will choose his methane-busting feed over a growing pack of competitors.

As global demand for meat and dairy continues to rise, the pressure to make livestock farming more sustainable is intensifying.

This has created an opportunity for a new wave of startups developing feed additives aimed at reducing methane emissions in cows and sheep. Investors from Jeff Bezos to Andrew Forrest are rushing to back this emerging space.

One such company is Sydney-based Number 8 Bio, which earlier this month secured a $7 million funding round led by Main Sequence Ventures, The March Group, and Breakthrough Victoria. The startup claims its feed can reduce methane emissions from cattle by up to 90%.

Importantly, the company’s feed is highly scalable and offers farmers a tangible productivity benefit, potentially giving it an edge over other solutions like seaweed-based alternatives.
