'Incident after incident': Calls for board oversight of harassment to boost STEM diversity
The Albanese government has accepted a series of recommendations designed to boost diversity in Australia's science and technology sectors.
The chair of a sweeping review aiming to boost diversity in Australia's technology sector has applauded the Albanese government's decision to accept its recommendations, including measures to improve boards' oversight of sexual harassment and discrimination.
At the Southstart festival in Adelaide this week, industry minister Ed Husic confirmed the government would accept all eleven recommendations from the Pathway to Diversity in STEM Review, which was originally commissioned to present an actionable roadmap for enhancing diversity and inclusion within science and technology fields and published in February 2024.
"It was a welcome surprise," the review's chair, Sally-Ann Williams told Capital Brief. But Williams pointed out that with a federal election looming, the real work lies ahead in securing cross-party commitment to implementation.
"The opportunity before the Australian public now is to make sure that anybody that is looking to be voted into parliament is of the same view, because those recommendations and implementations will obviously not take place this side of the election".
