Jim Chalmers will meet OpenAI’s chief strategy officer Jason Kwon on Thursday, a week after he spoke with the company’s product chief in Sydney, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Chalmers and Kwon will discuss the potential for “strategic investments” in Australia, one of the people said.

The news comes a day after OpenAI’s announcement of a similar investment in the UK. There, OpenAI will work with Nscale — roughly analogous to a UK version of AirTrunk — to build an initial cluster of up to 8,000 Nvidia GPUs, an investment expected to cost hundreds of millions of dollars. The company says this could eventually grow to 31,000 GPUs, which would cost billions.

Australia has made it clear it wants to be home to such infrastructure investments. Assistant digital economy minister Andrew Charlton visited OpenAI, Google and others last month to pitch Australia’s advantages. But the country is not alone in vying for attention.
