Monthly CPI debut set to shake up RBA interest rate puzzle
The ABS will release full CPI data in a monthly format for the first time, providing new insights into the economy but adding to the complexity facing the RBA as it charts a future course for rates.
The first new monthly inflation figures will be published this week. But there's little sign anything short of a shock will shift the Reserve Bank's wait-and-see approach.
Here’s what you need to know about the key economic data releases this week.
New numbers
The data: Consumer Price Index (CPI), October 2025, Australian Bureau of Statistics
When: Wednesday 26 November 2025
Reporter's note: The Australian Bureau of Statistics will release the latest CPI data in a monthly format for the first time, rather than a partial "indicator" as graphed above. This has been a work in progress for a long period of time and vocally supported by the Reserve Bank of Australia as a useful improvement to provide the central bank with the best up-to-date information.
But that isn't to say this will solve all the data challenges. Economists still expect this dataset to be volatile, akin to the indicator measure.
