Rampersand cofounder and partner Paul Naphtali believes the opportunity for venture capital in Australia in the next decade is ten times what we’ve already seen.

To capitalise on that Rampersand has appointed two new partners: Taryn Pieterse, who has been promoted from investment principal, and Andrew Poesaste, who joins from specialist UK first-check VC firm Angular Ventures, known for backing unicorns Forter and Firebolt.

It’s an interesting time for growth in VC, with a prolonged correction following the hype cycle of 2021. Latest figures show the number of deals is down this quarter, with the latest Cut Through Venture quarterly reporting that deals under $5 million, $20 million, and $50 million all hit five-year lows — although both the average and median deal sizes were bigger.

But Napthali is convinced about the potential that lies ahead.

“This could be legitimately the golden decade for Australia,” he says. “For the first time we’ve got a flow of high quality founders, we've got experience, whether it's domestic or international, and we've got an amount of capital here that can support them.”
