Synchron co-founder Nick Opie has lifted the lid on his new brain-computer interface startup, Ultra Bionics, which will aim to help fight Parkinson's disease, epileptic seizures and depression.

Opie has been tightlipped about the venture since founding it last August, but gave details at Tanarra Capital's Entrepreneurs & Founders Forum in Melbourne on Tuesday while hinting that Australia's maturing VC industry will allow it to stay in the country for longer than Synchron did.

"The difference which is really good to see is that there is some money," Opie said, comparing co-founding Ultra Bionics last year to Synchron in 2012.

"The institutions are becoming encouraged to support this activity and bet on a horse that's going to take a long time to get around the track, but when it gets there is going to make a big difference."
