Ming Long appointed as new CSIRO chair after Kathryn Fagg resigns

The news: CSIRO chair Kathryn Fagg has resigned from her position for personal reasons, with deputy chair Ming Long appointed as her successor. The organisation has also welcomed Vanessa Sullivan as a new board member.

The context: Long brings extensive governance experience across financial services, real estate, infrastructure and telecommunications.

She is actively involved in Australia's climate transition through her roles with the Climate Governance Initiative at the Australian Institute of Company Directors and ASIC's Corporate Governance Consultative Panel.

Sullivan joins the board with 20 years of experience in the energy, water and sustainability sectors, including recent work in hydrogen industry development.

Fagg served as CSIRO chair for more than three years, having taken the role in October 2021. She had been on the Board since August 2018. Long had served as deputy chair since May 2024.

What they said: "CSIRO has benefitted from having such a pioneering woman in STEM at the helm and I wish her all the very best for the future," Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic said.

Long stated: "I am honoured to be appointed Chair and acknowledge Kathryn Fagg's significant leadership and legacy in positioning CSIRO for the future."
