The news: Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic has announced the appointment of Peter Rossdeutscher AM as the new chair of Industry Innovation and Science Australia (IISA), succeeding Andrew Stevens who recently completed his second and final term.

The numbers: Rossdeutscher has been appointed for a three-year term. Stevens served six years in the role.

The context: Rossdeutscher brings extensive board experience across the quantum, mining, robotics, education and startup sectors. He currently serves as chair of Quantum Australia and co-chairs First Nations X, a not-for-profit organisation supporting Indigenous innovation and startups. He previously led Quantum Girls at the University of Western Australia, a national initiative promoting STEM careers through quantum science and computing education. IISA is an independent statutory board that advises the federal government on industry, innovation, science and research matters, while also monitoring government innovation programs.

What they said: "Peter's background makes him a standout for the role of IISA Chair," Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic said.

"His track record leading start-ups and mentoring the next generation of entrepreneurs to scale-up their firms, something the IISA has identified as a key priority. Given the need to strengthen business dynamism more broadly in our economy, having someone with Peter's experience will prove to be especially valuable."
