The news: Australian biotech Samsara Eco has appointed Lars Kissau as its first general manager of Asia, based in Singapore.

The context: Kissau will oversee the launch of the company's first international nylon plant set for 2028.

The plant will produce low carbon circular materials for garments at scale through its proprietary EosEco enzymatic recycling technology.

The upcoming nylon facility, currently being designed by engineering partner KBR, represents the first of Samsara Eco's planned international facilities.

Kissau joins Samsara Eco after 20 years at BASF, where he most recently led their net zero accelerator focused on implementing low carbon and circular economy technologies.

The appointment follows the opening of its first industrial-scale infinite recycling plant in Jerrabomberra, Australia, and a 10-year offtake agreement with lululemon to supply approximately 20% of the company's overall fibre portfolio.

The company has raised over $150 million from investors including Temasek, Breakthrough VIC, Greycroft, DCVC, CEFC, lululemon, Hitachi Ventures, Titanium Ventures and Wollemi Capital.

What they said: "Samsara Eco's technology is not a niche solution but one that can scale and create real world change. Nylon and mixed plastics have historically been a challenge to recycle, which is why Samsara Eco's potential is so promising," Kissau said.

"The technology has the power to change the whole value chain of plastics, and with it, change industries."
