The latest member of Shayne Elliott’s leadership team out the door at ANZ is head of technology Gerard Florian, who joins Maile Carnegie and — although not formally announced — Elliott’s long-time strategy consigliere Antony Strong in the retirement village.
Perhaps as part of new CEO Nuno Matos’ efficiency drive, the ASX announcement for Florian appears to have been a search and replace job on the Carnegie announcement.

But his departure is intriguing because it casts a spotlight on what is arguably the hottest gig in banking at the moment: the head of AI.
There is interest around what ANZ will do with his role, which reported directly to the CEO. Globally, there is a trend towards creating a position specifically focused on data, analytics and AI at the executive table. Currently, these functions report into the group executive technology and services — the role held by Florian.
