In a business landscape increasingly inundated with automated messages, one Australian startup is championing a leaner, more targeted approach to communication — while leveraging artificial intelligence to achieve it.

Freckle, a data enrichment and research platform, has secured $2.9 million in pre-seed funding to help B2B companies better understand and reach their customers. The funding round was led by Asymmetric Capital Partners and included participation from Brenteca Investments, Mintaka VC, CoVentures and Polaris Ventures.

Founded by Nathan Merzvinskis, Freckle says it aims to democratise access to enriched business data, making it accessible to go-to-market teams without technical expertise. Merzvinskis, who previously founded Everproof (acquired by GO1), developed the idea while grappling with data challenges at his former companies.

"Everyone was using these legacy databases that either had coverage issues or inaccurate data in them," Merzvinskis said. "At Skedulo, where I was chief of staff, it was really important to know whether a company had a field workforce or not. But that was never captured by our database."
