Square Peg's Paul Bassat insists VC remains his main focus despite new democracy initiative
The Square Peg founder has launched public policy lobbying initiative Amplify, but remains committed to venture capital as his biggest time investment.
While fixing democracy might sound like a full-time job, Square Peg founder and partner Paul Bassat is quick to point out that he loves venture capital and isn’t stepping back from it any time soon. In fact, he’s as busy as ever — and "loves" what he does.
“I just lead an investment in Cuttable five week ago, and I’m on several boards,” Bassat told Capital Brief. “I was in San Francisco 10 days ago for the Airwallex board, I was up 4am two days in a row for the Rokt board and I’m out there raising a fund with my colleagues.”
Bassat’s reassurance comes a day after he announced the launch of Amplify, a new democracy initiative backed by the Commonwealth Bank and led by former NSW Education Department secretary Georgina Harrisson, of which he is executive chair.
The non-profit organisation aims to improve trust in democracy and develop people-driven public policy solutions by hosting events, facilitating online conversations and sharing evidence with a representative cross-section of society. The goal of the initiative is to persuade Canberra policymakers to make better decisions for Australia’s future.
