Billion dollar software startup Dovetail is facing deepening scrutiny over its governance and board structure after its chief executive ⸺ one of only two directors ⸺ was the subject of serious harassment allegations from a senior employee.

Details of a messy lawsuit against the customer research startup and its CEO Benjamin Humphrey became public last week, with chief legal counsel Bethany Lo Russo accusing Humphrey of "a pernicious and relentless pursuit", using his authority to pressure her into sexual encounters and other inappropriate behaviour.

Humphrey strongly denies the claims and has pledged to not only defend them but to initiate separate defamation proceedings. “I vehemently deny the allegations and I have ample evidence to negate the claim”, he said last week.

While the matter will be dealt with in the Federal Court, governance experts and other ecosystem leaders are now questioning whether the company had adequate oversight and whether it was able to independently respond to the complaint.
