Deep tech VC Main Sequence is bolstering its healthcare investment strategy

Main Sequence has recruited three healthcare specialists and hopes to expand investments across therapeutics, diagnostics, devices and digital health, with a particular focus on women's health.

Main Sequence, one of Australia's leading deep tech venture capital firms, is broadening its healthcare investment after building up a team with expertise in the field.

Along with principal Elaine Stead, who holds a PhD in Biochemistry, other recent hires with health and biotech experience are Alex Romero, an associate focused on emerging technologies and data-driven insights, and Emerald Scofield, an associate who brings deep tech market analysis experience and expertise in incubating early-stage companies.

The move comes as Main Sequence seeks to strengthen its position in healthcare, which is one of the firm's six core challenge areas (decarbonise the planet, bridge the gap to space, next intelligence leap, supercharge industrial productivity, feed 10 billion people, and humanity scale healthcare) but has seen less investment activity than the others despite Australia's leadership in medical research.

The strategy expansion doesn't represent a shift but rather an enhancement of the firm's capabilities to evaluate a wider range of healthcare opportunities, said Stead.
