Canva power couple's Wedgetail vehicle pioneers 'venture conservationism'
The family office of Canva co-founder Cam Adams and his wife Lisa Miller has adopted a new form of VC they hope will provide a blueprint for addressing the climate and nature crisis.
Wedgetail, the family office of Lisa Miller and Canva co-founder Cameron Adams, has one of the country's most-specialised funding focuses: improving biodiversity. Miller, who is the founder and CEO and has a background as a zoologist, describes it as “venture conservationism”.
“We're changing financial flows to save nature,” she says. That means rethinking venture capital, and even its less money-focused cousin, social impact investing.
“There's a lot of impact investors out there who really are still talking about status quo, they are still looking for the same return as VCs,” said Miller.
“You obviously want this idea of sustainable investment and to attract new investors, but the reality is, that the problem underpinning financial systems is that they only value profitability.”
